Supporting Military Families: The Impact of Veterans Assistance Program

Managing military life can be tough for families, especially those with kids who have special needs. But one family found a source of hope through the Easterseals Veterans Assistance Program. This program has been a true lifeline for their son, Anthony, who’s on the autism spectrum.

The Hockensmith Family, led by a retired Army veteran, has experienced the unique challenges that come with military transitions. The assistance offered by Easterseals has alleviated some of their burdens, particularly for their young son, Anthony, who is on the autism spectrum. Through the program, the family was able to access respite care, music lessons, and horseback riding lessons. These resources not only provide essential support for the parents as caregivers but also enrich Anthony’s life with opportunities that bring him joy and personal growth.

The respite care has been particularly beneficial, allowing the family to recharge and manage everyday responsibilities. This essential time off has proven invaluable for the Hockensmiths, granting them the space to focus on their well-being while ensuring that Anthony continues to thrive.

Anthony has greatly benefited from the music and horseback riding lessons, which serve as wonderful therapeutic outlets. These activities have not only fostered his confidence but also brought him immense joy, demonstrating the power of specialized support in helping children flourish.
